Moral Issues These
pages will focus primarily on the views found within Christianity and
Islam. *How do Christians make
moral decisions?* All
Christians believe that moral decisions should be based on the teachings
of Jesus in the New Testament and the Ten Commandments in the Old
Testament. Roman
Catholics
believe these teachings are best interpreted by the
Church, particularly by the Head of the Church, the Pope. Orthodox
Christians would base their decision on how the Bible has been
interpreted by councils of bishops. Protestants believe
that each individual should make their own decision based on what the
Bible says, but they will also be guided by decisions made by
democratically elected bodies of Church leaders.
*How do Muslims make moral decisions?* There
is an Islamic legal system based on God's laws. This is known as
the Shari'ah (the way God wants men to walk). This is based
on God's words in the Qur'an but also uses the Sunnah (examples
and sayings of Muhammad recorded in the hadith). When
Muslims make moral decisions they first turn to the Shari'ah. If
this does not provide answers then they will ask a Muslim lawyer for
advice or read the Qur'an to see if they can find a relevant teaching. Everything
Muslims are allowed to do is called HALAL. Everything they are
forbidden to do is called HARAM.
Within these pages I am going to begin
by introducing each of the following topics and then discussing what
Christianity and Islam say about them. It is worth noting that
these are the two largest religions in the world and the people who
follow each faith are spread throughout the world. It is worth
reading the information with an open mind and remembering that not all
people who follow the same religion will have the same point of view. Just
